Preston Northcote Angling Club Reports

15th November 2009 – Freshwater MAA Competition.

The MAA competition was based at Thornton on the Goulburn River with bank fishing allowed for Lake Eildon, the Pondage and the Goulburn River and tributaries downstream to Molesworth. 28 anglers from various clubs were present at the sigh on at 10.30am. The weather conditions were fine and warm and the river was clear and running at 3500ML and with a discharge temperature of 13.8 degrees. The pondage levels fluctuated throughout the day.

The fishing was poor on the Saturday with few fish brought to scale. The best being a redfin weighing 0.790kgs. The best trout was a rainbow that tipped the scales at 0.760kgs.

The fishing on the Sunday changed for the better with some wonderful fish being taken from the pondage and the river. The best fish at the 1.30pm weigh-in was a rainbow that weighed 3.700kgs. A real beauty!

The Greensborough No 1 team won the day and the Herb Jesson Shield with a total weight of 12.935kgs. Footscray No 1 was second with a weight of 8.785kgs and Preston No 1 was third with 3.360kgs. The best bag was won by A Smeaton from Footscray with 5.660kgs.

Prestons competition was won by John Clarke weighing a brown trout a tick under 2 kgs. Les Penrose got second place with two fish for 1.905kgs. Our 8 competitors weighed a total of 5 fish for 5.315kgs. A great average weight from the river.
