ItÕs been a while, but at last we were heading to a Lake that promised us either big fish or heartbreak. The reports that were coming from Khancoban had been very sketchy. On the previous few March competitions Brown trout in the 2 to 3 kg range had been caught. On this trip five club members, 2 juniors members, 2 non members, and two Juniors non members made their way along the highway to Albury and then across the border to Khancoban.
On the Saturday we woke to find a calm flat lake with the promise of a nice sunny day waiting for us.
We had trolled for quite a while before the reports of small fish started coming through on the radio. The trusted, LoftyÕs & TassieÕs just didnÕt seem to be on the job. These fish were all between 28-32cm in length. Not exactly the fish we came here for.
Differing methods were employed, and even though the fish appeared to be stacked up in the old river bed enticing them to the lures and into the boat was another story.
Try as we might it was only Bernie Harris that managed to get a good fish on for the day. BernieÕs fish weighed in at 1.521kg cleaned.
Tony Mobrici quietly went about bagging a few fish on a very trying day. He presented to scale three lovely Brown trout that weighed in at 1.295 kg. TonyÕs best fish tipped the scales at 670 grams cleaned weight.
Most of the members divided their time on the Saturday, between trolling and bait fishing. Neither method was better than the other.
Best lures colours on the first day were Tassie style lures in, whites and greens.

On a weekend of contrasts Sunday greeted us with heavy rain that continued to patchy rain for the rest of the day.
For diligent anglers brave enough to fish, neither the weather conditions, or the fishing improved. (Most of us slept in and took no further part in the competition)
On the social side of things, the majority of the members had a great Saturday night out at the local country club. We participated in a trivia night that was put on for a charity and performed with distinction. We finished last. We are not as clever as we think.
For the competition a total of 6 fish were caught. Many others were released. Our total weight was 3.876 kgs. The total bag consisted of 6 Brown Trout.
Our Competition Winners were as follows:
1st Tony Mobrici with 4 fish for 1.805 kg
2nd Bernard Harris with 1 fish for 1.521 kg
3rd Julian Costa with 1 fish for 0.550 kg
