Preston Angling Club Reports

March 7th-9th 2009 - Freshwater Khancoban

Five members and their wives together with another two members and a junior all arrived at the caravan park by 6.30pm on Friday. Tony Dorner was a late entry and Damien Coter withdrew from the competition as he had been fishing from the lake that day. There was a further two late entries on Saturday when Mick Coats and Bernard Harris arrived.

Members began fishing early on Saturday morning in good conditions and by the afternoon it was quite hot. In contrast to last year there were no great patches of weed on the lake. At the weigh in on Saturday night which was held under difficult conditions as the caravan park was the venue for a bushfire fundraising dinner and auction which was attended by a lot of the residents of Khancoban as well as some of our members six redfin and four brown trout were weighed in. Les Penrose and Peter Patterson each had three redfin whilst Tony Dorner had three nice brown trout in a bag of 3.585 kg one of which weighed 1.770 kg.

Some members again rose early on Sunday and conditions warmed up so much that a lot of anglers returned during the day as it became too hot. At the final weigh in on Sunday a further eight brown trout were weighed in two by Peter Patterson, one by junior Anthony Coter, three by Tony Dorner and two by Ross Halligan.

A total of eighteen fish were weighed in for the trip (six redfin and twelve brown trout) for a cleaned weight of 9.680 kg. Many trout of legal size were returned to the water. Tony Dorner won the trip and first trophy with a bag of six brown trout for 4.640 kg, Peter Patterson was second with a bag of three redfin and two brown trout for 2.120 kg, Les Penrose was third and took the second trophy with a bag of 3 redfin for 1.255 kg. Les also took the heaviest redfin for the season of 0.575 kg and the heaviest bag of redfin for the season.

The majority of fish were taken whilst trolling whilst others were taken on mudeye and scrubworm.
