Fishing Reports

Lake Meston and Junction Lake, Tasmania Central Highlands (private trip)

23rd - 26th October 2015
by PedroArvy

Bruce Love caught 6 rainbow trout spinning with Tassie Devils from his raft. I caught one on fly. I have to say that being out fished 6 to 1 was a bit depressing. I am on a quest to work out if fly fishing lakes is superior to other methods but have no evidence to say it is. In fact tallying reports from many club fly fishing trips versus Preston Northcote Angling Club’s non fly fishing trips I have to say it is definitely inferior. I have the earnest entreaties of Philip Weigall and Scott X to keep me going.

I had restricted access to about 150 m of unpolaroidable shallow shoreline to fish at Junction Lake so I can’t really compare it to Bruce’s raft which covered the whole lake. There were not a lot of rising fish, in fact there are more rising fish at Newlyn at the moment. I tried every blind search technique known to mankind over about 6-7 hours fishing time. Small nymphs and buzzers stripped agonisingly slowly for hours. Floating line and sink tip line. Woolly buggers all colours, minnows in black/green/grey, a damsel nymph even though there were no damsels in sight (1 fish), 2 dries static, 1 dry 1 trailing midge slowly stripped across the surface on dusk. If only Greg French was there...
