Camperdown Area, Labour Day Long Weekend 2018

10th - 12th March 2018
by Richard Higlett

Labour Day long weekend fresh water comp Camperdown area

8 members and one guest attended this event.  5 members stayed at the Purrumbete Caravan Park which was booked by the club.  The weather over the three days was ideal for fishing all areas by boat or land.  Warm weather and low wind saw some fish Bullen Merri whilst other’s fish Lake Purrumbete.  Ray Martin was road testing his camping/fishing pontoon boat that he designed.  Which resembled a floating version of the Hilton Hotel, with guest Kevin.

Saturday:  On a warm day the members were spread over the two Lakes.  By the end of the day Bernie and Wayne Harris fishing together in the Jam Tin, had bagged out on Chinook Salmon at Bullen Merri, with bag weights of 2.940kg and 2.600kg respectively.  Richard Higlett had a nice salmon of 760 grams, whilst his anchor man Stan Petkovic went fishless.  Kevin Bamford and Steve Ravari struck out.  Tony Dorner, Ray Martin and Kevin also found the fishing tuff.

Sunday:  Lake Purrumbete was proving difficult with even the redfin not on the chew.  Richard picked up a nice brown early trolling Tassie devils, whilst other members struggled with shut down fish and blustery conditions.  Richard and Kevin pulled up stumps at lunch time and travelled the short distance to Bullen Merri, where the brothers Harris had fish jumping into their boat.  The move proved right because Richard locked on to a nice salmon straight away.  Anchor Man Stan tried his hardest to pull a fish, he even broke out the Chunky Cheese Power Bait combo, to no avail.  At the end of the day it was Bernie with 5 salmon for 3.770kg (largest fish 925gm) Wayne, 5 salmon for 3.195kg and Richard with 2 fish for 1,110kg. the rest went fishless.

Monday:  Only three members fished Bullen Merri for no Fish.  Provisional leader of the comp is Bernie Harris with 10 Chinook salmon for a combined bag weight of 6.710kg.  2nd is Wayne Harris with 10 chinook salmon for a combined bag weight of 5.795kg.  3rd is Richard Higlett with one brown and 2 salmon for a bag weight of 1.860kg.  The weekend revealed that Bait was king in catching the chinook Salmon.

Thanks too Kevin Bamford and Tony Dorner for being the referees.
