Freshwater go anywhere Australia Day weekend Jan 2018

26th - 28th January 2018
by Richard Higlett

Freshwater go anywhere Australia Day weekend, was held over three days with the weight in at the clubrooms 7pm Sunday evening.

Five club members fished their favourite locations on a very hot weekend, with light winds, ideal for those in boats.

Stan Petkovic and David Cahir fished Lake Eppolock along side the boat skiers, and people frolicking in the water to escape the heat.  Both men had no luck with only a carp and a small Roach.

Ski boats are a part of fishing the lakes in summer and no more evidence of this was Richard Higlett’s choice of Lake Eildon, in particular, the Delatite arm.  Richard had visions of boating another big Cod like the one he caught on Cod opening, that’s where the dream ended with rumbling storm clouds closing in on the lake and resulting drop in the barometer.  He threw everything at the fish trolling late into the evenings only to catch some undersize redfin.  In a drastic move Richard pulled up Camp after day two and drive four hours too The Western District lake of Bullen Merri to chase the Chinook Salmon.

On Saturday Wayne Harris and Stuart Taylor fished Lake Bullen Merri.  Wayne had a cracking session bagging four Chinook Salmon, the largest of which was a fat 2kg’s.  The Fish were caught on winged lures and Bait.  Stuart had no luck and was wilting under the hot sun.  No amount of sun screen or water could save the poor bloke.  Wayne thought Stuart was hallucinating when he declared that he had caught a “wombat”, the wombat turned out to be a bait trap with 30 gudgeon in it.

As it turned out Wayne Harris was the only member to catch a weigh in with 4 Chinook Salmon for 4.7kg. Well done Wayne.  Stuart Taylor was the most dehydrated and Richard Higlett the most kilometres driven.
